What Is SASE? A Plain-English Guide

When everyone worked in one office, securing the business was simpler: protect the building's network and you protected most of the work. Now people work from home, coffee shops, and airports, using cloud apps from everywhere. SASE is the security model built for that reality. Here's the plain-English version.

What is SASE?

SASE (pronounced "sassy," short for Secure Access Service Edge) is an approach that combines networking and security into one cloud-delivered service. Instead of routing everyone back through the office network to be secured, SASE protects users and connects them to apps securely wherever they are — through the cloud.

In short: it's security and networking merged and delivered from the cloud, built for a workforce that's no longer sitting in one building.

Why the old model broke

The traditional approach secured the office perimeter and sent remote traffic back through headquarters to be checked. That worked when most people and apps lived inside the office. But now:

  • People work everywhere — not behind the office firewall.
  • Apps live in the cloud — not in the office server room.
  • Routing everything through HQ is slow — and makes no sense when neither the user nor the app is there.

SASE fixes the mismatch by moving security to the cloud, close to the users and apps, instead of anchoring it to a building.

What SASE includes

SASE bundles several networking and security pieces into one cloud service, typically including:

  • SD-WAN — smart, efficient connectivity between locations and to the cloud.
  • Secure web gateway — filtering and protecting web traffic.
  • Cloud firewall — firewall protection delivered from the cloud.
  • Zero-trust access — verifying every user and device before granting access, never assuming trust.
  • Cloud access security — controlling and protecting how cloud apps are used.

The point is one integrated service instead of a pile of separate products that don't talk to each other.

Why it matters

The way people work has permanently changed, and security built for the old office-centric world leaves gaps and slows everyone down. SASE matches security to how work actually happens now — protecting people and data wherever they are, delivered from the cloud, as one connected service. For any business with remote or hybrid staff and cloud apps, it's increasingly the model that fits.

A note on getting there

SASE is a framework, not a single product you flip on — it's assembled from networking and security pieces (often including tools like SD-WAN, zero-trust access, and cloud security) that have to work together and be managed well. Which pieces you need, and how they're configured, depends on your business. Rolling it out thoughtfully is what turns the concept into real protection and better performance.

Frequently asked questions

What is SASE?
SASE (Secure Access Service Edge, pronounced "sassy") is an approach that combines networking and security into one cloud-delivered service. Instead of routing users back through the office to be secured, it protects them and connects them to apps securely wherever they are, through the cloud — built for remote and hybrid work.
Why is SASE needed now?
The traditional model secured the office perimeter and sent remote traffic back through headquarters. That no longer fits: people work everywhere, apps live in the cloud, and routing everything through the office is slow and pointless when neither the user nor the app is there. SASE moves security to the cloud, close to users and apps.
What does SASE include?
SASE typically bundles SD-WAN (smart connectivity), a secure web gateway, a cloud-delivered firewall, zero-trust access (verifying every user and device), and cloud access security — all as one integrated cloud service rather than separate, disconnected products.
Is SASE a single product?
No — SASE is a framework assembled from several networking and security components that must work together, not a single product you turn on. Which pieces you need and how they're configured depends on your business, so rolling it out thoughtfully and managing it well is what makes it effective.
